February
Plant of the Month Lenten Rose Helleborus niger Ah the Lenten Rose is blooming! What a wonderful surprise every February when my Helleborus starts showing off. I know it's coming but it's always such a welcome sight in our dreary, rainy winter season.
This evergreen winter bloomer comes in many different colors and bloom styles. The part we call a "petal" is actually the sepal and the actual bloom is hidden inside. The sepal will hold color for a very long time. Helleborus prefers afternoon shade, growing to about 12" high with a spread up 24". They will multiply and you are able to harvest babies from your main clump. They can also produce babies from seed so you sometimes find them popping up away from the mama plant. They are not invasive at all. Just fun to be able to share or move them to other spots in the yard! |
